YiffyFox posting in Califur
Well, this is not a bash post.  I am legitimately curious as to why people think the Ice Cream Social may have gone bad.  I personally did not attend Friday.  So I could not be witness to its goodness or badness.  I've heard rumors that it was bad, and was wondering what kind of funky chit went down in the city!

The ice cream social has typically cost the con 15.00 or per person to provide, we sell a 2.00 ticket to limit attendance more then anything.

Doodles: DO NOT WANT
Because Loscon doesn't charge extra for theirs, and they have a helluva lot more congoers than CF does. If you have to charge for it, don't do it.

I went there, and I didn't enjoy the ice cream. Everyone was having a good time but the fact we paid to attend it and it was basically like going to a gas station and getting an ice cream bar kinda sucked.

The reason why it was fun, everyone had a great time and they were very friendly and polite. I'd rather not pay for such cheap ice cream, but I will attend the next ice cream social just because I did have fun and everyone there was extremely friendly.

What was the Ice Cream?

Normally Califur Spends about 12++ per person on the Ice Cream social.

Goddamn, are you getting ripped. $12 per person should be getting you truckloads of Haagen Daas.

It was just really cheap, I think it was kinda cool to hang out, but for the most part I just wanted to leave.

I think it would have been fun if they had scooped ice cream.

Tasty Eagle
Haagen-Dasz ice cream bars, Klondike bars, Giant ice cream sandwiches, and Good Humor strawberry shortcake bars.

There was no scooped ice cream or toppings. No sprinkles, hot fudge, whipped cream.

It was meh. I got my $3 worth, I suppose. There are worse things to complain about.

I didn't go but hearing that it was mostly ice cream bars I'm going to have to agree. It would probably be better to get a thing of cones and some tubs of ice cream, or rent a soft serve machine or something. I wouldn't mind paying for something like that no problem.

Here a solution to the complainers:

Who do I speak to to volunteer for this event the next Califur? I'll even donate some toppings.

Also typically how many people attend this event.

1) It was on Friday... before a lot of people had even shown up yet.
2) As mentioned, ice cream bars. In prior years it WAS large tubs of ice cream that you scooped up into a little bowl and adorned with nuts or sprinkles and whipped cream.

Hopefully next year will be more like years past. have the social on Saturday or Sunday and bring back the big barrels of ice cream

Okay, so the ice cream social every year is one of the events we do to get our catering budget met. You see each and every year we are required to order a certain minimum amount of money for catering or the hotels won't sign a contract with us.

Now we could easily decide to just buy ourselves and staffers catered events and keep it all to ourselves, but several years ago, someone came up with the idea of a ice cream social. The ice cream social is suppose to be three flavours of ice cream scooped into bowls with extra toppings like chocolates and oreos and all kinds of stuff.

This costs us about 7-15$ per head. Now ... because thats a bit expensive, and because we don't want everyone at the convention to go and flood the place, we order usually about 150 people worth of ice cream, and then sell tickets to recoup some of the costs and to limit attendance. The cost we sell the tickets for is 2.50 or 3.00.

Now this year the hotel seems to have had a misunderstanding, or just downright didn't want to co-operate. So instead of doing a nice ice cream social like they have done in previous years, they did this. Well .. it kinda sucked, but you did get two ice cream bars for the price you paid so I dare say no one was ripped off in terms of price. (except us)

Now .. as for bringing food in, well that's specifically banned. Why you ask? Well it's simple, if the hotel just LET us bring in food for the things like the ice cream social, why on earth would we pay their outrageous prices?

So yeah, ice cream social didn't go according to plan, if this was your first, don't give up on it. It's a fun event. If it wasn't your first, I can understand why you may be upset, but we'll try to fix er up for next year.

Never been a fan of the ice cream social. It's costly to the con, costly to the attendees, and no one gets the flavor/amount of ice cream they want.

FWA had a really, REALLY good idea for a similar gathering. They had two chocolate fountains set up and a variety of fruits and crackers to dip into the chocolate. It was deliciously messy and FUN. ^_^

When I worked at Linens N' Things a long arse time ago, chocolate fountains ran around $50 a piece. Might be a good alternative investment.

Once again Voy,

It doesn't matter how cheap we can get these things. This is a catered event because we are REQUIRED to do catered events. So even if a chocolate fountain is cheap outside the con, the hotel will most likely rape us on price.

OMG, the thought of that much melted chocolate anywhere in the vicinity of fursuits. I can't imagine a scenario that does not end in disaster! :>

I'm sure the fursuiters stayed well away from that area.
