Was I the only one who seemed to think that we were not wanted at the hotel Hyatt for this convention? As much as the need is for larger event space at this convention I do not think the Hyatt is the place for us.

It is not a hotel built for a convention type theme, the prices are very high for what little amenities offered, although the staff was never rude to me I could see it in their eyes that we were not wanted, we do not come close to filling up enough rooms to warrant this hotel, the hallways are cramped and do not make for good gathering areas, there is too many other events going on (Cosmetics convention, Senior prom, WEDDING?!), and a majority of the guests had negative responses to us. Oh ya and a black curtain? What the hell was that about?

Even though the Holiday Inn had cramped event space to the point of the masquerade selling out- the staff was friendly, the main areas and lobby made for good meeting space, the location was closer to affordable food establishments, the general non furry crowd was not so "uppity" and did not look down upon us, the hotel was affordable, the room block seems easier to fill than the Hyatt, and the hotel is not a labyrinth like the Hyatt, (If we are no longer accepted at this hotel disregard this section).

Honestly I do not think we will be welcomed back at the hotel next year. And if we are I might not chose to return for that year.

*EDIT* Thanks to the staff at the con. You did the best job you could considering the situation.

The Holiday Inn is just too small for the con's needs. The Atrium across from John Wayne would be good. We'd take over the entire location, and furcons have a long history with the place.

Yeah, last time I went to Califur was Holiday Inn days and registered. This year, I decided not to try out regging, and it seemed like a lot of my friends who DID register for Califur just got bitched at by Con security for stupid stuff. And yes, I agree, it appeared hotel staff hated us. I think it was a mutual hate though. The fact that if you touched anything in the room it felt like you were going to get charged. Great hotel, nice pool, big, but that was about it. (A example for a person who regged and got yelled at: one friend of mine spraying cologne or something like that to cover up the awful smell that was eminating from the lobby Sunday morning.) To everyone's noses, this was pleasant. To con staff or security or whatever, this was no bueno. I knew that'd happen, because ConOps (at Califur at least) is intent on making everyone's lives miserable. I'm really saddened to hear the 303 party got shut down. I know the person who was throwing that party and he tried his best to make sure things didn't go overboard or whatever... I will certainly not be returning to Califur. Really glad I didn't pay to reg. I mean... get yelled at. (And yes, I fully realize that this is the LJ version of the scritch and bitch or whatever it was called, and it's probably just going to turn into a flame war. Because that's what LJ is for.

yeah, I couldnt help but feeling unwanted the whole time. we had our share of rude comments. I felt the entire con was compacted into one small corridor, between the rooms with the reg desk and the dealers den. Also one thing that got me was the "you are being photographed here whether you like it or not", in the BUSIEST part of the hotel. Im not sure but it didnt seem at all like alot of the staff wanted us to return next year.

You're all making me less bummed about missing the con. ;)

Seriously though, is there some reason Califur can't be held at the Burbank Marriott? The last couple Confurences were held there, it's right across the street from the Bob Hope airport, and there's even a Amtrak/Metrolink station within walking distance.

Um, that hotel is the reason ConFurence no longer exists. It's WAY too expensive. Hell, The Hyatt was the same rates for far higher quality. If we speak of locals, yeah, it's harder. But for out-of-towners, John Wayne is a superior airport and there's shuttle service as needed to the hotel.

Humm, well I did have my dislikes for this Con, I hated the fact that wedding people/prom people/ other non furs kept coming into our area and fucking with fursuiters. I even saw one drunk guy try to take of my friends fursuit head.

-_-;

Dispite the drama, over all I loved this hotel. And honestly the Califur staff is amazing. They don't get paid to run this con, they do it because like everyone else they love being furry. What I would like to point out is that many people bitch about the cons..... however they never ask to be on staff. I say if you dont know what it takes to run the con, you can't complain. There for I will be asking to be on staff for next year. x3

An Ethel Among Mermans: Niko - Angry - Murtalize ya!
Totally agreed! I would /not/ recommend this hotel to anyone. It is not ideal for a convention, and it is far overpriced. The way they treat their guests as if they're doing US a favor by /letting/ us stay here with the bare minimum for a ridiculous price. $13 parking and charging for internet when we're already paying out the ass for a dinky room? Hardly worth it.

I also don't appreciate being treated like a second class citizen by being covered with a black sheet. I understand wanting to make a nice atmosphere for a wedding, but it was there the whole time, like we were an inconvenience for the hotel and everyone else there. We paid for the venue, would they treat any other less popular event this way? What about a mary kay convention, would they cover them up? I have half a mind to write the hotel staff about this. They will not be getting my business again.

The lighting conditions in the dealer's den were /terrible/. Glen maxed up the light as best he could so its not the con's fault. I noticed that things I colored in the den looked way different than in regular light, and a couple of times I colored animals /green/ because the light made my green pencil look like brown one under the light conditions, which is not optimal for wanting to create quality art for your patrons if your coyotes are green :P (for the record I am not colorblind).

Also, even though the staff wasn't directly rude, I found the way they handled situations really terrible. There was a guy peeing on the lawn in front of the hotel disturbing the furry group and Con Ops tried to apprehend him and asked the hotel staff for help....they did /nothing/.

As for the Dead Drum party being shut down I know for a fact that Con Ops did everything they could to solve the problem but there were reports of underage drinking by an angry parent (which I think is bull but whatever) and Con Ops can't compete with that. They tried to reason with them but that's just on the other side of the law. It sucked.

So yeah, would /not/ do this again. We need to find a new venue. I'm really not wanting to attend Califur next year if I'm going to have to pay out the ass to be treated like shit. (oh and by the way, I'm still at the hotel, and paying for the internet, and its taken me 3 fucking times to post this message because my paid internet keeps crapping out. NOT PLEASED)

Actually, the parking was easily handled: Just leave after 9 PM, when the gates are left open.

The internet access is the only other area that needs improvement., As for the wedding and other folks, what can you say? They were paying a helluva lot more for their space, so only a fool would dis them over a hobbyist con like Califur.

I found the staff to be gracious to a fault, and honestly apologized for having to make the changes they did. But given how much that wedding was costing them, I'd be a bridezilla, too.

RAD Moose (aka teh Moger)
I didn't get a chance to go this year, due to many reasons, but after help with a (non-fur) con at this hotel previously, I was very worried about how it would go. The con that I helped with was a non-business oriented con and the hotel and staff was not happy.

I see that some people are complaining about the conops and other con staff, but from the furs that I spoke with, they felt that the staff was fighting an uphill battle with the Hyatt and didn't get the support from the hotel.

I know comparing it to FC or AC is a bit much, but I hope that a better location is chosen for next year. I like the idea of the Burbank Marriott. =)

Holy Schnikies! I'm really glad I didn't head down there now!

One reason for my decision was the hotel itself. I stayed there last month on one of my socal trips and I was less than impressed with the expensive and far from the hotel parking. The additional costs for just about everything drove me crazy too.

The black curtain thing sounds over the top! Was this set up in the corridor of the convention area?

No, it was in the main lobby area, diving it in half. They also moved most of the couches into the hallway where most of the con was so we'd have a place to sit. If they'd wanted to be assholes, they could have pulled them completely.

I think the most valid complaint is the best: The hotel is bigger than the con needs for present rates of expansion. I believe the Atrium across the way from John Wayne is being discussed, with the next door hotel available as overflow.

Not to sound like I want us hidden... however I think things would have been vastly different if we were on the far end of the hotel where the wedding was.... that way we wouldnt have as many people walking into our area... and would not have had cross over with the wedding

First con for me

There where a number of thing wrong with the place that the con was at and here is a list of them that i have off the top of my head

The location is more of a place that rich snobs would go to room for one night just to go, we where not welcomed there and i for one seeing as this was my first con do not like to be looked down at for being who i am, sadly we as a group are looked down on by what is considered normal people, i felt like we were isolated and alienated what with the black things hanging everywhere and with being told i couldn't stand where i was every 2 min, i hated having to walk around the building just to get to my car and i even got injured (which bled and it might leave a scar for at least a year), it was not right for us to be pushed aside every time the hotel peoples felt that they wished to walk there, they could have gone around seeing as there are a number of halls that were not being used, i didn't feel right with the camera person there poking his head where it didn't belong and filming us when ever he felt like without so much as a warning i mean i was just standing there and next think i know there is a blinding light pointed at me and i had no clue why.

Now i could go on but ill leave some for the number of others that feel that we where used and abused (and not in a good way mind you) but i will add this , i feel that the con was okay for the most part but the place could have been a lot better even if they held it in a abandoned warehouse on the water front of NY
