Califur is over...

I think it went off well! Well, aside the internet and the registration line...

How about you guys, what are your thoughts on Califur? I'd like to hear some after-action reports!

Oh. And any comments about Gaming. I would like to hear those. n.n

Gaming's not bad at all in my opinion. There seems to be every game system there except for the original X-box, Atari 2600 and Jaguar. =P

Alas, no Atari 2600 was brought in or offered, and the Xbox is replaced with the 360 =P

I still to this day think the Jaguar is a myth.

I'll try to bring my original 6 switch Atari (Sears) 2600 next time =)

Don't own a Jaguar (although have played them often as I did some work with Atari in the 80s.

No Team Fortress? Fix that next time. Rig a LAN so we can blow one another up reeel gud. =};-3

Only other problem I heard of was a incident at the cabaret, but that was neither the fault of the con or the hotel and can be considered an aberration.

I just found out about that incident. Aaaaand that's all I have to say on it in a public setting. *chuckles*

As for the Team Fortress, guess what I found Sunday, as I was tearing everything down? A copy of The Orange Box for the 360. Not quite what you'd prefer, I think, but I banged my head against the wall for forgetting to mention it. I think next year I /really/ need to have a list of games I have on-site printed out and posted.

As for PC gaming, if I can get 4 gaming rigs together, I'd love to have them. We're going to be swapping rooms between Electronic and Tabletop Gaming next year, so we'll have the room - if I can get the systems. I don't own that many myself, and I don't think there are many who would be willing to donate them =P Unless there's a BYOC event. Mmm. I'll look into that.

What happened at the cabaret? I don't tend to attend con events as I'm usually stuck in the dealer's den, then go to dinner, then socialize with friends, so I didn't hear anything. I just heard that something happened at the dance with the DJ having some sort of hardcore drug experience or something? But could just be rumor.

From what I understand, it involves a chair that got wet.

Haven't heard anything about the DJ having any sort of drug experience, though. I think that one would have caught my ear n.n

A fellow with a cell phone forgot the basics of theatrical behavior. No drugs or other illegal substances involved. There was a scene, and police were involved. As I left the con around midnight, I saw the twin cruisers of the Irvine PD parked outside the hotel.

Again, neither the con or hotel's fault, and it was handled discretely so both actually get kudos for their response.

I, for one, had a really awesome time! Sales were good, everyone was very nice, and this was the most drama-free con I've ever attended, and it went very very smoothly.

I'm just concerned over some rumors I heard (all I hear are rumors cuz I'm in the dealer's den the whole time so I never really witness anything that doesn't happen in that room) about someone /stealing/ one of the registration portals? Who does that? I mean honestly... :P

This is the first I've heard of the reg portal being stolen!

It certainly sounds more interesting than it breaking down and refusing to be fixed, which is what I heard coming out of Registration staff *chuckles*

I'm glad to hear your sales were good! I'm sorry I couldn't stop by your table to throw more money at you, but times are tight. Out of curiosity, what did you sell the most of, and what brought in the most money? I'm always curious about this stuff =D

Oddly this was the first con in my entire history of dealing where prints sold more than anything. I usually only keep a couple of each print in stock because the flow usually isn't there, but this con proved me wrong, and its something to think about for future cons. I only sold 3 badges which is really, really unusual as that's typically my best seller. I typically do upwards of 15-20 badges at a con, but this one, not so much, and its not like my prices have changed for those.

Yeah like, 3 or 4 other people came up to me individually and told me one of the reg computers was stolen and that was the reason for the reg problems on Saturday. Like I said though, most of what i hear is rumor, and chances are by the time they reach me in the dealer's room things have gotten way out of control.

Yeah, no, this is the first I heard of stolen computers. Probably a game of telephone gone 'wrong'. *chuckles*

And that's interesting to hear of the prints *chuckles*

Nothing was stolen from reg, merely misplaced.

I had a good time - and props to the people who donated so much of their time. The hotel was very nice - almost seemed a bit on the fancy side, though I can deal with that sort of thing.

I was a bit confused over the $13/day Orange Co. tax on my bill, which essentially made the rooms cost just under $140 per evening - ouch! Free internet would have been a neat perk for that kind of pricing. I found out the hard way that the internet was also $13 per connection. I originally figured it would be some kind of thing where I'd be given a key-code so multiple laptops could be used in the room instead of just one laptop.

The parking situation was really stellar - I had no trouble getting in and out of the parking lot with the convention discount/freebie card. Big thanks to that set up there.

Was the 13 dollar a day tax thing always there - or is that something new for the location that the convention was at this year?

Thanks again for the fun convention, staffers and volunteers! :o)

You will find that with the current economic situation and the state of California's budget shortfall, lots of little tax increases like that have happened.

June 8 2009, 20:58:02 UTC 2 years ago

I will? :o)

Califur is the only convention that's really in my yard, so to speak - so it's the only instance(besides FC) where I'll find myself at a hotel in any given county where taxes might fluctuate in times of economic crisis - my college classes have been keeping me from hitting up any of the other ones out there..though I recently just finished up my last class for my degree - so maybe that will change. Hooray!

I'm not faulting Califur or anyone over it - it's just the first time I've ever seen a $13 per day county tax. Gosh!

I guess it's a good thing I'm such an innocent little flyer who hasn't been spending lots of money on naughty arts. That's a plausible statement for me to make, maybe... >_>

The tax bit is new to me, but can be a sign of the times. It may have to do also with the close proximity to the airport.

Internet was... *shrug* I use it just to check e-mails and FA during downtime, so it didn't hurt as badly as it could've. I understand frustration with it, though!

Hotel staff was AMAZING.

From the few conversations and encounters I had with them, they were friendly, adorably curious and very enthusiastic, and so accomodating. If Califur doesn't go back to this hotel I'll be surprised. Even my run-ins with other non-con hotel attendees was great. A bunch of Texan flight attendants couldn't get enough of the costumes and tails!

I believe we've already signed a contract saying we will return next year. *chuckle*

I think we have to see waht we can do to give the hotel staff badges or ears or something.
